5 Classes You Overlooked @ Shutterfest + Gurus Guide To The St. Louis Dining Scene!
Let the countdown begin! ShutterFest is just a week away and first off, I want to start by saying hats off to the ShutterFest crew! I’ve known these guys for a long time and I’m really looking forward to experiencing what they’ve built. It’s been exciting watching you guys in the FB group coming together planning your days in St. Louis. Union Station is an amazing facility filled with endless places to shoot in. I can’t wait to see what you guys come up with!
This will be my first ShutterFest, but I know most of the educators very well and I thought I could offer up some advice as you plan your schedules. Also, if you’ve never been to St. Louis you’re in for a treat! There are some amazing eateries, and if you like BBQ and Beer, well… you’ve landed in smoked meat and hops heaven!
Plan your week!
The SF17 app is a fantastic tool, but as with all technology, it can fail us, so make sure to backup all that planning! Double up your information in your calendar app and set alerts for yourself. You can also enter other events, such as informal meetings with vendors (make one with me!) and dinner dates. I’d highly recommend planning some dinners with friends in advance. Everyone loves to get invited, so take charge and plan a fun night out!
The SongFreedom/FyrFly Must-Not–Miss Restaurants!
As the designated new guy, I’ve taken charge and asked our crew for their favorite St. Louis eateries and their favorite dishes:
Amanda’s Pick: Wheelhouse. Lobster Mac & Cheese!!
Becca’s Pick: Bailey’s Range. Try the Ballpark Pretzle Burger!
Nadaley’s Pick: Benton Park Cafe! She says, “The french toast is amazing!”
Jamie’s Pick: BOB – Catfish and Red Beans and Rice (can’t go wrong)
Five Classes You Forgot To Sign Up For!
As with any conference, many of the classes fill up fast. As a former conference director, I’ve fielded many notes from attendees who were upset they didn’t get into a class they wanted. While we all wish this never happened, I would always try to guide them into something else and encourage them to look at this as an opportunity to find something different. Trust me, if you didn’t get into the class you wanted I promise there’s still a great class that’s WIDE open where you’ll get a great learning experience. In most cases, I found that when an attendee “dug in” and really did their homework they found something great. Don’t be afraid to reach out to a teacher and ask them for more information on their classes. It’s their job to help you, and if they don’t respond you should let Sal’s team know. This goes for any conference; they are paid to be there, don’t be shy!
Here are 5 Shutterfest classes I think you might have overlooked and are worth a second glance:
Craig Lamere’s “Create Anything: Understanding Lighting Patterns,” 4/19 – 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Craig is a lighting master when it comes to on-the-fly techniques. His laid back teaching style always makes him a popular educator and of course his Boudoir and Senior classes always sell out fast. That said, this open class sounds awesome and the techniques he’ll teach in this class would be useful to anyone looking for some out of the box ideas.
Joe Switzer’s “The Video Edit,” 4/19 – 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Truth be told, I’m shocked his business class is sold out. Typically these classes don’t do well, but kudos to those of you who signed up for that! That said, Joe and Kristin are masters at teaching simple editing techniques. In today’s world, knowing how to edit video is a skill we all need. The importance of video for everything we do is paramount for all things social media today and these are the guys to learn from!
Lori Nordstrom’s “High End Sales + Selling for the Wall,” 4/18 – 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Simply put, Lori is the best! She’s run successful businesses that have stood the test of time. If you haven’t signed up for a sales class, this is a must not miss! There are only 5 spots left, so hurry!
Matthew The Body Kemmetmueller’s “Successful Marketing and Pricing to Jump Start Bookings,” 4/19 – 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. If you’re looking for that hidden gem, this is it! Matthew may come off a little on the goofy side, but I can assure you this guy knows his shit when it comes to running a successful studio. Sign up for his class NOW!
Melanie Andersons “Posing Seniors! Understanding The ‘S’ Curve and The ‘C’ Curve,” 4/18- 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. If you’re looking for high energy fun, Melanie is your gal! I guarantee you won’t have any problem hearing her and you’ll have a blast. If you’re looking for some go-to techniques with your Seniors, you won’t be disappointed!
